A washing machine holds more moving mass than anything else in the house, and it does so while wet, which is why bearings, seals and suspension take the strain first. Because so many laundry rooms in this part of Illinois sit in a finished basement, a washer problem here is frequently a water problem for the room around it, so leaks get priority on our schedule and we check the drain standpipe and the shutoff valves as part of every visit.

Unique Repair Services has been carrying out washer work in the northern suburbs since 1994, and the way we approach it has not changed much in that time. The appliance is read before it is quoted. A technician takes live readings, looks at whatever error history the machine has stored, and only then names a part, because on this appliance the difference between an inexpensive repair and a costly one usually comes down to a single measurement.

What happens during the appointment

You are given a two hour arrival window rather than an open ended day, and the technician calls ahead. Once the washer has been tested you are told plainly what has happened and given one price that includes both the part and the work. Nothing is opened up before you have agreed to that price.

Around three quarters of washer repairs are finished during that first visit, because our vans are stocked from our own records of what actually goes wrong on this appliance in these towns. Where something has to be ordered we tell you the date before we leave and book the return appointment then rather than calling you back about it later.

Manufacturers that build this appliance

Every make on our roster that produces this appliance type is listed further down the page, Miele, Asko, LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Maytag among them. The manufacturer matters more than most owners expect. A Miele and a GE can show an identical error for completely different reasons, and the route to the answer is different on each of them.

Is it worth repairing?

You will get a straight answer to that question. The rule we apply to our own decisions is this: when a repair would cost more than half the price of a comparable new appliance and the unit is already past two thirds of its expected service life, replacement is normally the better use of the money. Below that line, and on almost any built-in or professional appliance, repair wins comfortably. We would rather turn a job down than sell a part that is not worth buying.

What the washer is telling you

A washing machine holds more moving mass than anything else in the house, and it does so while wet, which is why bearings, seals and suspension take the strain first. Because so many laundry rooms in this part of Illinois sit in a finished basement, a washer problem here is frequently a water problem for the room around it, so leaks get priority on our schedule and we check the drain standpipe and the shutoff valves as part of every visit.

The machine fills and washes but never spins

On a front load washer the door lock is the first thing to test, because a lock that no longer confirms it is closed will let the machine wash and refuse to spin. After that the drive belt, the motor control board and the tachometer on the motor itself.

Water is left in the drum at the end of the cycle

The drain pump filter is the place to start, and on most machines the owner can reach it. Coins, hairpins and small buttons stop the impeller without breaking it. If the filter is clear, the pump, the pressure switch hose or a kinked drain line explains the rest.

The washer moves across the floor during spin

Shipping bolts left in place on a new installation, worn suspension rods on a top load machine, or shock absorbers on a front loader. Leveling matters more than people expect on a concrete basement floor, since there is nothing to absorb the movement.

A grinding or rumbling noise that rises with spin speed

Tub bearings. Caught early this is a bearing and seal repair. Left running, the seal lets water into the bearing housing and the repair grows into an outer tub assembly, so this is the one noise worth acting on quickly.

Laundry comes out smelling musty

Almost always biofilm in the door gasket, the detergent drawer and the drain hose of a front load machine, fed by too much detergent and a door left closed between washes. We clean the machine out properly and show you the maintenance routine that keeps it from returning.

The door will not unlock at the end of the cycle

Either the lock assembly itself, a board that is still reading water in the tub, or a drain problem holding the interlock closed. There is a manual release on most machines, and we will show you where yours is before we leave.

How the appointment runs, start to finish

Every visit follows the same shape, whichever appliance it is and whichever town you are in.

  • A two hour arrival window, confirmed by phone or text
  • A flat price approved by you before anything is opened
  • Nothing billed that you did not approve first
01

Tell us what the appliance is doing

Book online or call and describe what you are seeing. The brand, the model number if it is to hand, and what actually happens when the machine runs. The more detail you give, the more likely the right part is already on the van.

02

We run proper diagnostics

A technician arrives inside a two hour window, reads whatever the appliance has logged, tests the circuit it points at, and explains in plain language what has happened.

03

You approve one flat price

You are given a single price for the finished repair before anything is opened up. Approve it and most repairs are completed the same visit, with 30 days on labor printed on your invoice.

FAQ

washer repair questions

Are front load washers really more trouble than top loaders?

They are not more trouble, but they ask for a different habit. Leave the door and the detergent drawer open between loads, use a fraction of the detergent the box suggests, and run a hot maintenance wash once a month. Owners who do those three things rarely call us about odor at all.

My washer is nine years old and needs bearings. Repair or replace?

For Miele and Asko machines, repair without hesitation, because those are built to run for twenty years and the parts are available. For a mainstream machine where the bearing is pressed into a sealed outer tub, the parts and time can approach the price of a new washer, and we will lay out both numbers before you decide.

Do you service stacked laundry units in a closet?

Yes, and it is common work in Des Plaines and Park Ridge condominiums. Stacked units have to be separated to reach most parts, so we allow extra time for those appointments rather than rushing them, and we check that the closet has enough air movement, because heat with nowhere to go is what shortens the life of these machines.
