Oven and Range Repair

Cooking appliances are where careful work matters most, because gas, high current and a sealed oven cavity leave very little margin for a guess. Our technicians are trained to test igniters under load, read oven sensors against an independent thermometer and confirm gas pressure at the manifold rather than assume it, and every gas repair ends with a leak check at each joint that was opened.

Unique Repair Services has been carrying out oven / range work in the northern suburbs since 1994, and the way we approach it has not changed much in that time. The appliance is read before it is quoted. A technician takes live readings, looks at whatever error history the machine has stored, and only then names a part, because on this appliance the difference between an inexpensive repair and a costly one usually comes down to a single measurement.

What happens during the appointment

You are given a two hour arrival window rather than an open ended day, and the technician calls ahead. Once the oven / range has been tested you are told plainly what has happened and given one price that includes both the part and the work. Nothing is opened up before you have agreed to that price.

Around three quarters of oven / range repairs are finished during that first visit, because our vans are stocked from our own records of what actually goes wrong on this appliance in these towns. Where something has to be ordered we tell you the date before we leave and book the return appointment then rather than calling you back about it later.

Manufacturers that build this appliance

Every make on our roster that produces this appliance type is listed further down the page, Wolf, Thermador, Viking, La Cornue, Bertazzoni, DCS among them. The manufacturer matters more than most owners expect. A Wolf and a Dacor can show an identical error for completely different reasons, and the route to the answer is different on each of them.

Is it worth repairing?

You will get a straight answer to that question. The rule we apply to our own decisions is this: when a repair would cost more than half the price of a comparable new appliance and the unit is already past two thirds of its expected service life, replacement is normally the better use of the money. Below that line, and on almost any built-in or professional appliance, repair wins comfortably. We would rather turn a job down than sell a part that is not worth buying.

Where we carry out this work

Oven and Range Repair is available across all eleven towns we serve: Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Glenview, Northbrook, Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Buffalo Grove, Deerfield, Barrington, Winnetka and Wilmette. Prices, warranty and arrival windows are the same in every one of them, and there is no travel charge added anywhere inside the ZIP codes listed on our service area pages.

What the oven / range is telling you

Cooking appliances are where careful work matters most, because gas, high current and a sealed oven cavity leave very little margin for a guess. Our technicians are trained to test igniters under load, read oven sensors against an independent thermometer and confirm gas pressure at the manifold rather than assume it, and every gas repair ends with a leak check at each joint that was opened.

A gas oven takes a long time to light, or never lights at all

The hot surface igniter glows brightly enough to look healthy long after it has stopped drawing the current needed to open the safety valve. The reading that matters is amperage, not brightness, and it is the reason this repair is so often read wrong.

Food is browning on one side and staying pale on the other

Usually the convection fan or its motor, an oven sensor that has drifted out of tolerance, or a door hinge that lets the seal open by a few millimeters. We calibrate against a separate thermometer rather than trusting the display.

A surface burner clicks continuously after it has lit

Moisture or spillover has bridged the spark electrode. Cleaning and drying the igniter assembly resolves most of these, and a cracked ceramic insulator explains the rest.

An electric element has stopped heating

On a radiant cooktop this points to the element itself, the infinite switch behind the knob, or the control board on touch models. On a coil range it is normally the terminal block, which burns where the coil plugs in.

The oven door locked during self clean and will not release

The thermal limit has opened, the lock motor has jammed, or the board is holding the latch because it never saw the cavity return to a safe temperature. This is a repair worth booking rather than forcing, since the door mechanism bends easily.

An induction top reports an error code and shuts down

Induction generators shed heat through their own cooling fans, and a blocked intake will trip protection long before the coil is at risk. We check airflow and the temperature sensor on the generator board before considering the more expensive parts.

How it works

How the appointment runs, start to finish

Every visit follows the same shape, whichever appliance it is and whichever town you are in.

  • A two hour arrival window, confirmed by phone or text
  • A flat price approved by you before anything is opened
  • Nothing billed that you did not approve first
01

Tell us what the appliance is doing

Book online or call and describe what you are seeing. The brand, the model number if it is to hand, and what actually happens when the machine runs. The more detail you give, the more likely the right part is already on the van.

02

We run proper diagnostics

A technician arrives inside a two hour window, reads whatever the appliance has logged, tests the circuit it points at, and explains in plain language what has happened.

03

You approve one flat price

You are given a single price for the finished repair before anything is opened up. Approve it and most repairs are completed the same visit, with 30 days on labor printed on your invoice.

FAQ

oven / range repair questions

Do you work on professional gas ranges?

Yes. Wolf, Viking, Thermador, DCS, Bertazzoni and La Cornue are all part of the regular week, particularly in Winnetka, Wilmette and Barrington. These ranges are built to be serviced, and the burner assemblies, igniters and valves are all replaceable, so a thirty year old professional range is normally a repair rather than a write off.

My oven runs about 25 degrees cool. Can that be corrected?

In most cases yes, and often without any parts. Nearly every oven built in the last twenty years has a calibration offset in its control menu. If the offset does not hold, the oven sensor has drifted and is an inexpensive replacement. We verify with an independent probe placed at rack height before and after.

Is it safe to keep using a range that smells faintly of gas?

No. Turn the appliance off, open a window, and call the utility if the smell is strong. Once the line has been made safe we will test each joint with electronic detection and soap solution, and we do not leave a gas appliance running until every connection reads clean.
