Dishwashers are quiet machines that hide their problems well, and the northern suburbs give them a harder life than most because of the mineral load in the local water. A dishwasher call from us includes a look at water temperature at the tap, the condition of the spray arms and filter, and the drain arrangement under the sink, because at least a third of poor cleaning turns out to be an installation matter rather than a broken machine.

Unique Repair Services has been carrying out dishwasher work in the northern suburbs since 1994, and the way we approach it has not changed much in that time. The appliance is read before it is quoted. A technician takes live readings, looks at whatever error history the machine has stored, and only then names a part, because on this appliance the difference between an inexpensive repair and a costly one usually comes down to a single measurement.

What happens during the appointment

You are given a two hour arrival window rather than an open ended day, and the technician calls ahead. Once the dishwasher has been tested you are told plainly what has happened and given one price that includes both the part and the work. Nothing is opened up before you have agreed to that price.

Around three quarters of dishwasher repairs are finished during that first visit, because our vans are stocked from our own records of what actually goes wrong on this appliance in these towns. Where something has to be ordered we tell you the date before we leave and book the return appointment then rather than calling you back about it later.

Manufacturers that build this appliance

Every make on our roster that produces this appliance type is listed further down the page, Miele, Bosch, Asko, Thermador, KitchenAid, Monogram among them. The manufacturer matters more than most owners expect. A Miele and a Fisher & Paykel can show an identical error for completely different reasons, and the route to the answer is different on each of them.

Is it worth repairing?

You will get a straight answer to that question. The rule we apply to our own decisions is this: when a repair would cost more than half the price of a comparable new appliance and the unit is already past two thirds of its expected service life, replacement is normally the better use of the money. Below that line, and on almost any built-in or professional appliance, repair wins comfortably. We would rather turn a job down than sell a part that is not worth buying.

What the dishwasher is telling you

Dishwashers are quiet machines that hide their problems well, and the northern suburbs give them a harder life than most because of the mineral load in the local water. A dishwasher call from us includes a look at water temperature at the tap, the condition of the spray arms and filter, and the drain arrangement under the sink, because at least a third of poor cleaning turns out to be an installation matter rather than a broken machine.

Dishes come out with a white film or fine grit

Almost always water related. Low incoming temperature, a clogged filter, spray arm holes blocked with scale, or a detergent dose wrong for the hardness of the water. We measure rather than guess, and in Barrington and Deerfield we routinely find hardness high enough to justify a rinse aid change on its own.

Water standing in the bottom at the end of the cycle

A blocked drain hose, a drain pump impeller jammed with a fragment of glass or a label, or an air gap at the sink that has silted up. On many units the check valve in the sump is the real culprit and is a short repair.

The cycle stops partway through and the lights blink

Modern dishwashers log an error code and hold it until it is read. We read what the machine has recorded, then test the circuit it points at, which is faster and far more accurate than working through parts in order of price.

Water on the floor in front of the machine

Door gaskets harden and shrink with age, the lower door seal is often the one that goes first, and a spray arm that has come loose can throw water directly at the door. Leaks from underneath usually trace to the sump gasket or the circulation pump seal.

The detergent cup does not open

The wax motor or the release solenoid has stopped operating, or detergent residue has cemented the flap shut. Either way the wash runs with no detergent at all, which owners often read as poor cleaning performance.

The machine will not heat or dry

The heating element, the high limit thermostat, or on condensing dryers a vent flap that has stuck closed. Bosch, Miele and Asko machines dry by condensation rather than heat, so a load that comes out damp on those brands is normal and not a sign of a problem.

How the appointment runs, start to finish

Every visit follows the same shape, whichever appliance it is and whichever town you are in.

  • A two hour arrival window, confirmed by phone or text
  • A flat price approved by you before anything is opened
  • Nothing billed that you did not approve first
01

Tell us what the appliance is doing

Book online or call and describe what you are seeing. The brand, the model number if it is to hand, and what actually happens when the machine runs. The more detail you give, the more likely the right part is already on the van.

02

We run proper diagnostics

A technician arrives inside a two hour window, reads whatever the appliance has logged, tests the circuit it points at, and explains in plain language what has happened.

03

You approve one flat price

You are given a single price for the finished repair before anything is opened up. Approve it and most repairs are completed the same visit, with 30 days on labor printed on your invoice.

FAQ

dishwasher repair questions

Why do my glasses look cloudy even after a hot cycle?

There are two different causes and they need opposite answers. Mineral scale wipes off with a vinegar rinse and points at water hardness. Etching is permanent damage to the glass surface, caused by very soft water combined with too much detergent, and no repair will reverse it. Bringing one glass to the technician settles the question in seconds.

How long should a dishwasher cycle take?

Longer than most people expect. A normal cycle on a current machine runs between two and three hours, because low water use and low energy use are only possible with long soak and rinse phases. A machine that finishes in forty minutes on a normal setting is usually skipping the heat phase, which is worth investigating.

Is it worth repairing a dishwasher that is eight years old?

For a mid range machine with a failed circulation pump, the price of the repair starts to approach half the price of a new unit, and we will say so. For Miele, Bosch, Asko, Thermador and Monogram machines the calculation is different: those are built around stainless tubs and serviceable pumps, and repairing one at eight years is straightforward good sense.
