The motor hums but the ram does not move
A drive belt that has parted or slipped, or a start capacitor that no longer has enough charge to bring the motor up to speed. Both are same visit repairs on nearly every platform.
The drawer will not open after a cycle
The ram has stopped short of its home position, usually because a bottle or a can has wedged against the frame. Freeing it correctly means releasing the mechanism rather than pulling on the drawer, which bends the rails.
The cycle starts and then stops halfway
The top limit switch, the directional switch or the key interlock. These switches take a great deal of vibration over the years and are inexpensive to replace as a set.
Liquid leaking from the bottom of the cabinet
A split bag, a drawer liner that has cracked, or a missing charcoal filter housing. Cleaning the cabinet thoroughly is part of the repair, since the residue is what corrodes the rails.
A strong odor even with a new bag
The charcoal filter is exhausted or the deodorizer cartridge is missing. Replacing it and washing the drawer liner deals with almost every case.
The mechanism sounds rough or grinds during the down stroke
The power screws want cleaning and regreasing with the correct high pressure grease. Left dry they wear the nuts, which turns a simple service into a much larger repair.

Do people still install trash compactors?
Fewer than they once did, but a great many kitchens across Glenview, Northbrook and Winnetka still have one built into the run of cabinets, and the cutout is an awkward size to fill with anything else. Repairing the existing unit is usually simpler and cheaper than rebuilding that section of the kitchen.
Are parts still available?

How often should a compactor be serviced?
Cleaning and greasing the power screws once a year is the whole of it, and it takes very little time. Compactors that are serviced on that schedule tend to last for decades; the ones we have to condemn are nearly always the ones that were left dry.
