A dedicated ice maker is a small refrigeration system with a water circuit running through it, and both halves have to be right before it will produce properly. Because the water in most of our service area carries a real mineral load, scale on the evaporator plate is the single most common reason a machine slows down, and a descaling and sanitizing service will often restore full production without any parts at all.

Unique Repair Services has been carrying out ice maker work in the northern suburbs since 1994, and the way we approach it has not changed much in that time. The appliance is read before it is quoted. A technician takes live readings, looks at whatever error history the machine has stored, and only then names a part, because on this appliance the difference between an inexpensive repair and a costly one usually comes down to a single measurement.

What happens during the appointment

You are given a two hour arrival window rather than an open ended day, and the technician calls ahead. Once the ice maker has been tested you are told plainly what has happened and given one price that includes both the part and the work. Nothing is opened up before you have agreed to that price.

Around three quarters of ice maker repairs are finished during that first visit, because our vans are stocked from our own records of what actually goes wrong on this appliance in these towns. Where something has to be ordered we tell you the date before we leave and book the return appointment then rather than calling you back about it later.

Manufacturers that build this appliance

Every make on our roster that produces this appliance type is listed further down the page, U-Line, Viking, Monogram, Thermador, DCS, GE among them. The manufacturer matters more than most owners expect. A U-Line and a Whirlpool can show an identical error for completely different reasons, and the route to the answer is different on each of them.

Is it worth repairing?

You will get a straight answer to that question. The rule we apply to our own decisions is this: when a repair would cost more than half the price of a comparable new appliance and the unit is already past two thirds of its expected service life, replacement is normally the better use of the money. Below that line, and on almost any built-in or professional appliance, repair wins comfortably. We would rather turn a job down than sell a part that is not worth buying.

What the ice maker is telling you

A dedicated ice maker is a small refrigeration system with a water circuit running through it, and both halves have to be right before it will produce properly. Because the water in most of our service area carries a real mineral load, scale on the evaporator plate is the single most common reason a machine slows down, and a descaling and sanitizing service will often restore full production without any parts at all.

The machine runs a cycle but no ice drops

Either the harvest cycle is not warming the plate enough to release the slab, or the water pump is not delivering enough flow to build one. Both are testable in a few minutes with the front panel off.

Cubes are hollow, small or cloudy

Low water pressure, a partly closed shutoff valve, a saturated inlet filter, or scale on the evaporator. Cloudy ice in particular is a mineral matter and the reason we recommend an annual descale in Barrington and Deerfield.

Ice has frozen into one solid block in the bin

A bin thermostat or level sensor that is no longer stopping production, or a door gasket letting warm humid air in so the cubes melt and refreeze against each other.

Water pooling under an undercounter machine

The drain line, the drain pump on models that have one, or a bin gasket that has hardened. Gravity drains in an island installation are especially prone to silting up.

The unit is noticeably louder than it used to be

Condenser fins packed with kitchen dust and the fan working against them, or a water pump beginning to cavitate. Both are worth attending to early because they load the compressor.

A refrigerator ice maker fills but never freezes

The freezer is running warmer than it should. The ice maker is doing its job; the compartment around it is not. That is a refrigeration call rather than an ice maker call.

How the appointment runs, start to finish

Every visit follows the same shape, whichever appliance it is and whichever town you are in.

  • A flat price approved by you before anything is opened
  • Nothing billed that you did not approve first
01

Tell us what the appliance is doing

Book online or call and describe what you are seeing. The brand, the model number if it is to hand, and what actually happens when the machine runs. The more detail you give, the more likely the right part is already on the van.

02

We run proper diagnostics

A technician arrives inside a two hour window, reads whatever the appliance has logged, tests the circuit it points at, and explains in plain language what has happened.

03

You approve one flat price

You are given a single price for the finished repair before anything is opened up. Approve it and most repairs are completed the same visit, with 30 days on labor printed on your invoice.

FAQ

ice maker repair questions

How often should an ice maker be cleaned?

Twice a year is the manufacturer recommendation for most undercounter machines, and in our service area that is genuinely the right interval rather than a cautious one. Scale reduces production long before it stops it, so the machine rarely announces that it is due.

Why does the ice taste of the freezer?

Ice absorbs odor readily, particularly when production is slow and cubes sit in the bin for weeks. A fresh water filter, a cleaned bin and a full discard of the existing ice usually settles it. If the taste returns quickly, the supply line is worth checking.

Do you install ice makers as well as repair them?

We handle replacement of an existing undercounter or built-in machine, including the water connection and the drain, when the old unit has reached the end of its life. A first time installation that needs new plumbing run to the cabinet is work for a plumber, and we will say so rather than take it on.
